Humans, dogs, cats - the ones we spend our days with are my focus in this series of egg tempera paintings. In contrast to the formal portraits I have done in the past, the sitters in these paintings are in unguarded, casual poses and in informal settings. I play with looser brushstrokes to catch the light: a figure against a day lit window, another in the harsh light of a pizza shop at night.

Self-portraiture is exploration of the interior, but also an olive branch offered to dialogue and communion with the outside world. As I am able to play with the different ways I see myself, I want to extend an invitation to the viewer to see themselves differently or think deeply about how we see each other based on the experience with the figures before them. The work presented here was started at the Vermont Studio Center and ChaNorth residencies in the spring of 2024, experimenting with oil sticks and a more liberated approach to mark making.
