John Breakey

"By looking up and out, I am inspired to capture nature’s elusive luminosity found in the near and far distance. Slowing down to observe becomes a pure investment that supports a call to action. These atmospheric impressions are the result of simple pause and response acts.  

"Simple, sustained acts of observation aid me in subduing the pervasive influence of modern day screen culture. When I take time to slow down and view potential treasure on display, short moments become longer periods of observation. My painted expressions are born from the simple act of pausing to look up and out into the distant sky. I present these observed events of nature as simple, dense and reductive compositions that serve as a respite or pause for the viewer."

John Breakey’s career spans over thirty years as a designer, art director, and illustrator. Since 2003, he has served as the area coordinator for the Graphic Design department at the Delaware College of Art and Design. John’s passion for typography has been put to use in the areas of signage, environmental way-finding, branding, advertising, and web development for local, national, and global clients.  Prior to relocating to Wilmington in 1997, he operated a studio in New York City and provided creative services to the publishing, advertising, and design businesses.

Scott Alan McClurg

"I did not study photography much in school, but my grandfather was a photographer, as are my father and sister. So, it's a family tradition.  I became interested in photography along with the digital revolution around 2000. I found photography to be a spontaneous medium that enabled me to create rich, abstract images while revealing details that are difficult to see with the naked eye. Over the years, my subject matter has evolved through photographing wildlife and becoming interested in capturing the personalities of the animals, not merely their abstract beauty. This has enabled me to create images that are engaging on many emotional levels while retaining many abstract qualities."

Scott McClurg received his BFA in printmaking and ceramics in 1995 from the University of Delaware. He has been a studio artist at the Delaware Contemporary since they opened their facility on the Wilmington Riverfront in 1999.
