In this new installation, Jennifer Borders uses live plant materials, drawings, fabric, and historical references to question our use of the land, resources, and our inheritance of the world in which we now live. Inspired in part by Charles C. Mann’s books, 1491 and 1493, in which he discusses the “Columbian exchange” and the many interchanges of ideas, plants, peoples, diseases and foods that have shaped the contemporary world, Borders creates a personal response that touches on her own advocacy for native plants, our questionable uses of ornamental, non-native landscaping, and our obliviousness to the environmental and historical implications of the world we have created. A fundamental question at the heart of this new installation is, “What is native?”

Borders’ work has been exhibited at the Biggs Museum of American Art in Dover, DE, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and other venues. She was awarded an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Delaware Division of the Arts and an Individual Fellowship in Visual Arts from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts to help support her artistic practice. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from Tyler School of Art. Before pursuing art full time, she worked in the non profit sector in both curatorial and educational capacities. Currently, she maintains a studio at The Delaware Contemporary and remains engaged with her education and outreach interests through her work with the museum and programs like Project C.
