With Care

A SOLO EXHIBITION WITH WORKS BY BARY BIRM

November 1 - December 1, 2024

OPENING EVENT:
November 1, 2024 | 5 - 9 PM

In my studio I prioritize working toward a low toxic, low waste practice. The fabric for these large scale paintings is repurposed bed sheets, with a neon pink stain from my niece’s candy prompting some of my initial color choices. When I couldn’t clean the stain, I instead added more: bold sprinkles of color. They bleed out then dry quickly, caught in a brief moment of transition. Freezing a fluid form in time.

It’s all about timing with water based pigments and dyes. With a heightened sensitivity, I touch the fabric and I gauge the speed and spread of color. I let the elements lead the process working in collaboration with gravity, dirt, and wind. By collaborating with earth, I hope to catch a glimpse of nature’s magic.

I practice slow and quiet observation of the natural world, in a persistent search for hope and joy. In these paintings I include a flash of iridescence, only seen from a certain relative position, like little surprises to discover. Glowing color and suspended motion create a whirlwind of movement that carries over from one painting to the next. With a delicate lightness, these floaty images hover in the gallery.
