Catharine Fichtner
September 3, 2021 - January 7, 2022
OPENING EVENT:
Friday, September 10, 2021 | 5 - 9 PM during first Friday
Inspired by the schematic structures behind patterns, abstract painter Catharine Fichtner composes dynamic acrylic works that utilize both formal painterly practices while considering her own subconscious narratives. The foundation of the practice is rooted in Fichtner’s Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry, in which quilting and clothing production were a close family tradition. Fichtner’s stunning compositions utilize rich color and shape in order to piece together fragmented personal histories.
The selection of work touches on a variety of thoughts and considerations made by Fichtner, and visualized through her abstractions. While some are inspired by biological specimens and processes, such as The Use and Disuse of Parts, others further explore the dynamics of relationships and self, such as Mama’s Handy Work. Although each work initiates a different conversation, Fichtner’s practice employs repetition and patterns that she finds within these complex dialogues, both in the concept and the resulting visual product. The subject matter becomes as versatile as life itself.
Through Fichtner’s observations of both the real and celestial worlds, implied relationships and patterns emerge. These repetitions are then manifested through a layering of material fragments such as paint and cloth. The resulting rich compositional contrast mirrors these thoughtful observations, equally illuminating Fichtner’s practice and process. Based on subconscious discovery, Fichtner allows the material to reveal itself, creating loose narratives and pieces that transcend her historical traditions and elevate her adopted practice.
