RADIUS EXHIBITION

Mixed Messaging

JUNE 7 - August 25, 2024

OPENING EVENT: June 7, 2024 | 5 - 9 PM

John Day, Boxed In

MIXED MESSAGING is a collection of works that challenge the voyeur to engage with the artist’s art-making process and thereby conceptually participate in the act of construction.  Whether representative or abstract, each object is an unfamiliar juxtaposition of familiar materials. The selected artists creatively explore depth and dimensions, blurring the line between 2D and 3D. Through protruding, receding, or seeming to exist completely in the round, these dimensional variations contribute to a multidimensional and immersive experience for the viewer.

At the same time, the selection of works explores the outer boundaries of the mixed media category by representing a diverse range of styles and materials from works that are “more-than-just-a-painting” to a complex and temporary assemblage of culinary ingredients. Intentionally grouping seemingly unrelated objects, the viewer is challenged to reconsider the framework for how they respond and interact within the grouping.

By showcasing these mixed media works, Mixed Messaging intends to elevate the genre while drawing attention to playful and imaginative characteristics that can emerge.  It further looks to dismiss and provide a platform that debates traditional art categorization in museums across the globe.
